Nella botte piccola c’è il vino buono
In the small barrel, there's the good wine
This cuvée is a selection of Nebbiolo from the younger vines of the various “cru” in Barbaresco supplemented by grapes from the neighboring village of Neive. The average age of the vines is 30 years. The wine is fermented in stainless steel for 10 days to 2 weeks and then is refined in large oak barrels for an additional year before being bottled. An astonishing value … as are all of the fine wines from this remarkable estate.
Medium to full red color with brick and purple glints, the bouquet strong on leather and the palate big on firm tannins. A kiss of oak. A solid wine, full-bodied and dense, powerful and driving, with gripping tannins and a long carry. There is oak but it doesn't detract. More time would benefit it, however. A very satisfying, full-bodied Barbaresco and a great food wine
The wine is bottled without filtering or fining and is further aged in bottle for two to three months before it is released for sale. Marked by an orange-red tint to its color, the classic appearance of Nebbiolo, the wine is far from timid, showing a firm backbone of tannins that are a clear indicator of the traditional bent of this multi-generational domaine.
This typical red of the Langhe region is harvested from three separate parcels spread between the communes of Barbaresco and Neive. The vines are an average age of 30 years. After a fermentation of approximately 10 days in stainless steel, the wine is racked into large oak “botti” for about six months, being bottled at the onset of summer of the following year.
Harvested from classic clay-limestone soils from plots in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba, some planted in 1981 and the other portion in 1993. The grapes are crushed and fermented in stainless steel at 29 degrees Celsius for a period of a week to 10 days; then aged in stainless steel for seven to nine months before the bottling (unfiltered).
Floral and fruity with hints of white and citrus fruits, notes of cream and freshness
The wine is named after the brothers or fratelli, Antonio and Raimondo Levis, who founded the winery in 1938. Both had a passion for the Nebbiolo grape, which led them to the Langhe region. The brothers’ driving philosophy was “quality at any cost” and they worked tirelessly to meet that goal. It was thought that their ambition to make quality wine was even more so due to the fact they were both hearing impaired and used their wine as a form of expression.
In 2002, Raimondo Levis died and as a result, Antonio partnered with the esteemed Sartirano Family who has been making wine in the region since 1871. The Sartirano Family handles all aspects of the winemaking while still holding true to the Fratelli’s original ideals producing honest, classically styled wines.
Here, the grand Nebbiolo takes center stage, a wine made exclusively from this noble grape and harvested from vineyards outside of the Gattinara and Ghemme delimited zones but still in hillside sites on the slopes above and around the towns on the eastern shore of the Sesia river. Manual harvest occurs normally during the second half of October. The Zanetta family gives this wine a shorter maceration than it applies to the Gattinara but then the wine is aged in large (15 hectoliter) “botte” for two years before bottling and then left to age an additional year before being released to the market. It is a fine and elegant wine with subtle tannins, bright cherry flavors and a persistent finish that again emphasizes the complex mineral composition of the underlying soils.
